Heat Pump Installation & Servicing: what it is and when you need it
What it is
A heat pump extracts heat from the outside air and uses it to heat your home and hot water. We install and service heat pump systems, including the cylinder, controls and emitters they rely on.
Who it's for
Homeowners looking to reduce reliance on gas, those renovating or extending, and properties with good insulation or underfloor heating.
When you need it
When planning a boiler replacement, a major renovation or a move to low-carbon heating. Existing heat pumps need regular servicing to keep running efficiently.
Why use a professional
Heat pumps run at lower temperatures than boilers, so radiator sizes, pipework, the cylinder and controls must be designed for them. Poor design is the main reason heat pumps disappoint.
The cost of waiting
What happens if you leave it
A heat pump that isn't designed properly costs more to run and leaves rooms cold.
Risks if it's ignored
- Undersized radiators can leave rooms cold at heat pump flow temperatures.
- Poor controls set-up increases running costs.
- Unserviced units lose efficiency over time.
- The wrong cylinder means slow hot water recovery.
Common mistakes we see
- Treating a heat pump like a like-for-like boiler swap.
- Skipping the heat loss assessment.
- Keeping radiators that are too small for low-temperature heating.
- Running the heat pump on settings designed for a gas boiler.

In detail
Planning a heat pump for your home
A successful heat pump installation starts with understanding your home.
Air source heat pumps
An outdoor unit draws heat from the air even in cold weather. It needs a suitable outside position with good airflow.
Radiators and emitters
Some radiators may need upgrading to larger sizes. Underfloor heating works particularly well with heat pumps.
Hot water
Heat pumps need a cylinder with a larger coil. We specify and fit the right one.
Hybrid systems
In some homes, a heat pump working alongside a gas boiler can be a practical step.
Servicing
Annual checks of refrigerant performance, filters, controls and the outdoor unit keep efficiency high.
Useful guide
How a heat pump differs from a gas boiler
A gas boiler heats water to a high temperature quickly. A heat pump works best producing lower-temperature water for longer periods, keeping the home at a steady temperature rather than heating it up in short bursts. This difference is why heat pumps need to be designed as a whole system, not dropped in as a boiler replacement.
A heat loss assessment calculates how much heat each room loses on a cold day. This tells us what size heat pump you need and whether each radiator is big enough at lower flow temperatures. Rooms that fall short may need a larger radiator or underfloor heating.
Insulation makes a large difference. Loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and draught-proofing all reduce how much heat the home needs, which means a smaller, cheaper-to-run heat pump.
The outdoor unit needs a position with good airflow, a solid base and a sensible pipe route into the home. Noise and distance from neighbours are also considered.
Once installed, running a heat pump efficiently usually means leaving it to maintain a steady temperature, rather than switching it on and off. We set up the controls and show you how to get the best from it.
Heat pumps can be connected to existing radiators where they are large enough, to new larger radiators, to underfloor heating, or a mixture of these. Underfloor heating suits heat pumps particularly well because it spreads heat across a large surface at a low water temperature.
Servicing an existing heat pump includes checking the outdoor unit for debris and airflow, cleaning filters and strainers, checking system pressure and controls, and confirming the heat pump is performing as expected. Regular servicing helps it keep running efficiently year after year.
Because we work on gas boilers, cylinders, underfloor heating and controls as well as heat pumps, we can look at your whole heating system and recommend what makes sense for your home and budget.
