Heating Fault Finding: what it is and when you need it
What it is
Heating fault finding is the methodical diagnosis of problems across your whole central heating system, not just the boiler: pumps, valves, thermostats, programmers, wiring, radiators, cylinders and pipework.
Who it's for
Homeowners and landlords whose heating is unreliable, partly working or inefficient, especially where previous repairs haven't solved the problem.
When you need it
When some rooms stay cold, the boiler fires but radiators don't heat, pressure drops, the system is noisy, or heating comes on at the wrong times.
Why use a professional
Many heating faults sit outside the boiler. Without systematic testing, it is easy to replace expensive parts that were never the problem.
The cost of waiting
What happens if you leave it
Intermittent heating faults are frustrating, and they waste money while they continue.
Risks if it's ignored
- Cold spots and poor circulation make the boiler work harder and burn more gas.
- A sticking valve or failing pump can lead to a full breakdown.
- Hidden leaks can damage floors and ceilings.
- Sludge build-up spreads through the system and shortens boiler life.
Common mistakes we see
- Replacing the boiler when the fault is actually a valve, pump or control.
- Bleeding radiators repeatedly without asking why air keeps getting in.
- Turning up the thermostat to compensate for a poorly balanced system.
- Ignoring a gradual drop in pressure.
Our process
How we handle your heating fault finding
01
Listen
You tell us exactly what's happening and when.
02
Inspect
We look over the boiler, controls, pump, valves and radiators.
03
Test
We test components and wiring to isolate the fault.
04
Explain & fix
We explain the cause and the options, then carry out the repair.
05
Verify
We run the system to confirm every zone heats as it should.
What you get

In detail
Common central heating faults
These are examples of faults that can affect domestic central heating systems.
Radiators cold at the bottom
Usually a sign of sludge (magnetite) settling in the radiator. A power flush or radiator clean is often the answer.
Radiators cold at the top
Trapped air. If it keeps coming back, there may be a leak, a pump issue or a problem with the feed and expansion tank.
Some rooms hot, others cold
An unbalanced system, faulty thermostatic radiator valves or zone valve problems.
Heating won't switch on
Faulty programmer, room thermostat, wiring or zone valve, or a fault inside the boiler.
Noisy pipes and pumps
Air, sludge, incorrect pump speed or loose pipework. We find the source and fix it.
Underfloor and heat pump systems
We also diagnose faults on underfloor heating and heat pump systems, including manifold, actuator and control problems.
Useful guide
Simple checks you can do yourself
Check that the programmer is set to heating 'on', the room thermostat is set above the current room temperature, and the boiler pressure is within the normal range on the gauge. Make sure radiator valves are open. These simple checks rule out the most common settings issues.
If one or two radiators are cold at the top, bleeding them with a radiator key may help. If they need bleeding again soon after, or the pressure drops after bleeding, there is likely a deeper problem worth investigating.
Note when the fault happens: always, only on heating, only on hot water, only in the morning or only in cold weather. These patterns help us diagnose faster and keep costs down.
Anything involving the boiler internals, gas valve or flue must be dealt with by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Once we have found and fixed the fault, we run the whole system to confirm each radiator or zone heats properly and the controls switch on and off as they should. If we find the system is sludged, unbalanced or the controls are outdated, we explain what each improvement would do so you can choose what's worth doing.
Many faults we trace are linked: sludge causes a pump to fail, a failed pump causes the boiler to overheat and lock out. Fixing only the last symptom means the problem comes back. Looking at the whole system is how we stop repeat call-outs and give you heating you can rely on through the winter.

Questions
Heating Fault Finding FAQs
Can't see your question? Call 07843 900760; our emergency heating service runs 24/7.
Why are some of my radiators cold?
The usual causes are trapped air, sludge, faulty valves or an unbalanced system. We test to find which one it is.
My boiler is working but the heating isn't. Why?
The fault is often in a pump, valve, thermostat or programmer rather than the boiler itself.
Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?
Usually a leak, a faulty pressure relief valve or an expansion vessel issue. We trace and fix the cause.
Can you diagnose underfloor heating faults?
Yes. We install and maintain underfloor heating and diagnose its faults too.
How long does fault finding take?
Simple faults are often found quickly. Intermittent faults can take longer to trace; we keep you updated as we go.
Can you fix heating faults in Bushey and Radlett?
Yes. We cover Bushey, Radlett, Borehamwood and the surrounding areas.
Do you offer a 24/7 emergency service?
