Hot Water Cylinder Installation & Repair: what it is and when you need it

What it is

A hot water cylinder stores heated water for your taps and showers. We install, replace and repair vented (tank-fed) and unvented (mains pressure) cylinders, and fix immersion heaters, thermostats and valves.

Who it's for

Homes with system or regular boilers, larger households with several bathrooms, and homes with or planning a heat pump.

When you need it

When you run out of hot water too quickly, the cylinder is leaking, water isn't getting hot, or you're upgrading the boiler or adding a heat pump.

Why use a professional

Unvented cylinders store water under pressure and include safety devices that must be installed and maintained correctly. The right size and type makes a big difference to comfort and running costs.

The cost of waiting

What happens if you leave it

Cylinder problems usually start small: lukewarm water, a drip or a noise.

Risks if it's ignored

  • A leaking cylinder can cause significant water damage.
  • Faulty thermostats waste energy or fail to heat water properly.
  • Neglected unvented safety valves need checking.
  • Old copper cylinders lose heat quickly, increasing bills.

Common mistakes we see

  • Choosing a cylinder too small for the household.
  • Fitting an unvented cylinder without the correct safety discharge pipework.
  • Ignoring a dripping discharge pipe.
  • Not matching the cylinder to a future heat pump.

Unvented cylinders give mains-pressure showers where suitable.

Lower heat loss

Modern insulated cylinders hold heat longer.

Safe installation

Safety devices fitted and tested correctly.

Heat pump ready

We can specify cylinders suited to a future heat pump.

Guaranteed pipework

10-year guarantee on copper pipework.

In detail

Types of hot water cylinder

The right cylinder depends on your water pressure, space and heating system.

Vented cylinders

Fed from a cold water tank in the loft. Simple and reliable, but pressure depends on the height of the tank.

Unvented cylinders

Fed directly from the mains for stronger pressure, with no loft tank. They need specific safety devices and regular checks.

Heat pump cylinders

Heat pumps need cylinders with larger coils to transfer heat at lower temperatures.

Immersion heaters and thermostats

We replace failed immersion elements and cylinder thermostats, a common cause of no hot water.

Combi conversion

Some homes are better suited to removing the cylinder and fitting a combi boiler. We'll advise on what suits your household.

Useful guide

Choosing the right cylinder size

Cylinder size is usually measured in litres. A small cylinder may suit a couple with one bathroom, but a family with two bathrooms and showers running at the same time will need more stored hot water. Too small and you run out; too large and you pay to heat water you don't use.

Water pressure matters too. An unvented cylinder runs from the mains, so the incoming pressure and flow rate need to be good enough. We check this before recommending an unvented cylinder.

If you're planning a heat pump in the future, it's worth choosing a cylinder designed for heat pumps now, so it doesn't need replacing again later.

Older copper cylinders with thin factory insulation lose heat quickly. Modern cylinders are better insulated, holding heat longer and reducing how often the boiler needs to reheat the water.

When a cylinder is replaced, we also check the valves, pipework and controls connected to it. Fitting a new cylinder onto worn valves or an old, unreliable thermostat can lead to problems soon after, so we make sure the whole hot water side of the system is in good order.

Common cylinder faults include a failed immersion heater, a faulty cylinder thermostat, a sticking motorised valve and, on unvented cylinders, problems with the expansion vessel or pressure relief valve. Water dripping from a discharge pipe outside is a sign something needs checking and should not be ignored.

Limescale is another issue in hard water areas around London and Hertfordshire. Scale builds up on the coil and immersion element, slowing reheating and increasing energy use. Where scale is a problem, we can advise on the right approach to protect the new cylinder.

Whether you need a repair or a replacement, we explain the options and the cost before starting, test everything after the work, and show you how to use the controls.
